Surface Design Guild Meeting

October 13, 2009

6:31 pm @ Firehouse

patsy opened the meeting, welcoming 5 guests and new members.  Betsy Meyer approved the minutes and Lori Stone seconded.

Treasurer, Marcia Kaszuba reported a beginning balance of $353.85.  There are 36 paid members.  $675 was deposited.

$50 was paid to the Art Council, leaving a balance of $918.65.

Marcia explained our membership drive goal:  members bringing in 5 or more paid members will be given a $25 check.  Members do not have to join at the same time.  Just let Marcia know who invited each to join and she will keep track.

Secretary, Nancy Faris reported requests for a suggestion box, which she will bring to all future meetings.

Old Business:

Betsy Meyer reported on FAB, comprised of the four guilds and headed by The Weaver’s Guild.  It will be held for four days, Feb. 11 – 14, 2010.  There is a $30 application fee, screening for quality and appropriate work, encouraging the best of the best to apply.  A sign-up sheet was passed out, listing the dates, commission structure and pertinent information.  There will be a post card photo session on December 5th at Betsy’s house.  December 1st is the deadline to apply.  Graphic Artist, Tanya Weinberger, will design the post card.  Application forms are available for interested artists.  Lois suggested an advertising brochure, listing a bio or business card ad as an artist resource for the show.

The Anything String Event was reported by Kim Sherrod.  Shawl pieces were turned in.  There will be a meeting at Picasso’s Moon next week to put it together.  Embellishment will be done in November and the deadline to turn it in is December 1st.

Laura Reed reported on the By Laws update project.  The By Laws may be viewed on our website if there are questions.  Our By Laws are 9-10 years old and need to be adjusted more often to eliminate inconsistencies and discrepancies.  Committee members Laura, Betsy Meyer and Nancy David will be ready to present soon.

We have been invited to join the Manasota Weaver’s Guild for a holiday party on December 12th at the St. Armand’s Key Lutheran Church.

We will vote near the end of the year on whether we want to extend our meetings from September through May to include a meeting all 12 months.

New Busniess:

Ellen Simon reported on a show called “What’s An Art Quilt Anyway?”  It will be held at the Bahia Vista Mennonite Church at Beneva and McIntosh, $5 charge.

She has a piece entered in The World Quilt Show, held November 13-15 in West Palm Beach.  There is a $35 bus trip, leaving the Fruitville Library at 7:30 am and returning at 7:30 pm November 14th.  Mancuso Brothers are vendors.

Roberta Miller, Ann McCunney and Lori Stone have pieces entered in a show at Art Center Sarasota. Laura Reed has entered a piece in the 1st Annual Art Exhibit at Art & Frame.

Art Center Manatee has offered us a 1-day show in lieu of FAB for no fee.  It is Saturday, December 19th  in the Blue Studio.  There will be a 3-part pay slip, we handle no money and there will be a 60/40 split.  Set-up is 7:30-8am, show hours 10-5.  Diane Bunker is committee head.  There are no display limits and everyone is responsible for their own work.  Tables will be provided.

February is our 10th Anniversary and we need ideas for a new logo, banners, etc.  We would like some of the previous and founding members to attend our celebration.

Kim walked us through our new website navigation and showed examples of banners, collage and pics.  To post a blog, ask for admin. priveleges.  There will be an on-site technique page discussion  as well.

patsy will teach a class at Keeton’s on Zentangles.  Fee is $35, minimum 5 students.

Elizabeth Hillman, from the university of NewMexico spoke and gave a demo on bookmaking.  To get started she suggests finding old books…..”one that speaks to you”….size, cover, etc. and re-make it.  Hard backs work best.  Exacto knives work much better than scissors for cutting.  Begin by removing pages from the covers, leaving both covers together.  There are no limits, no right or wrong.  For play day bring sandpaper, watercolor paper (gen. wt. coldpress), glue and sewing machine.

Any number of pages can be used, but should be an even number.

Make pages smaller than cover.  Cut, tear, attach together leaving a gap so they can fold on top of each other.  The theme is “Nature”.  A material list will be provided for playday.

 ATC’s were swapped.

Show & Tell – Freebies - Inspiration Tables were viewed by many in back.

patsy adjourned the meeting at 8:23pm

Respectfully submitted by

Nancy Faris, Secretary
