October Meeting

  • Tue, October 10, 2017
  • 6:00 PM
  • Waldemere Fire Station Upstairs Classroom

Our October meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 10th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Upstairs Classroom at the Waldemere Fire Station. The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. for those who wish to socialize before the meeting begins.

Our own patsy monk will be talking about and showing us chains made using the Viking Knit technique (woven wire art), which has been around for ages.  Examples of the work from AD 850-1100 have been found in Scotland.  The earliest examples in Britain were from the 9th Century.  Other pieces, specifically a necklace dating between AD 600-1100, was found in Sweden.

If you have the equipment to make Viking Knit, bring it to the meeting on Tuesday.  If you don't have the equipment, patsy will be selling kits for $15.00.  The kits will include:

  • 1 marked dowel
  • 1 popular draw plate with 3 holes & room for other sizes
  • "T" pin
  • Foam for pulling
  • 18 feet of 24g copper wire

(NOTE:  An awl can be used instead of a "T" pin and nylon tipped pliers can be used instead of the foam piece).

The most suggested wire to use is 24g, which can be found at Michael's or Joann's.  If you cannot find it, 22g or 26g will work.  Colors are great, but can be scraped off when pulling the piece through the draw plate. Copper and black are popular choices, along with gold and silver.

We will be working on Viking Knit chains at the meeting and working on them again on Play Day on October 29, 2017.  The magic occurs when you pull your "knitted" piece through a draw plate!  Of course, you can shape it by hand, but the draw plate creates a more uniform chain.
