Minutes
Surface Design Guild Meeting
September
9
2008
6:30
pm at
Firehouse
Following
the 6-6:30 social hour, Kendra
opened the meeting and welcomed all.
Since
there were a
number of visitors and new members, she introduced the officers and let
each
member and guest introduce herself. The minutes from June (available on
the web
site) were approved. The treasurer reported 56 members and a balance of
$776.90
as of June 2008. Dues for this year are due now, and can be mailed to
Judy
Merick or paid at the October meeting.
Kendra
presented
information on our new year’s activities and programs. Inspiration
table – will continue.
Members are encouraged to bring items of interest to display, along with
a card
with their name and explanation of the technique if
needed.
Name tags- hopefully made by the artist herself.
Leave in
handbag or car so they will not be forgotten at
home.
Technique Pages – every participant writes a page about a
technique of
interest and makes a copy, along with a sample, for every other
participant and
one for the guild. They should be enclosed in plastic sleeves. Sign up
in
December or the January meeting at the very latest so there is a firm
head
count. At the February meeting they will be distributed, and each artist
can
give a very brief summary presentation about their technique. Be
thinking of
what you will choose to share with the group. Each year’s collection has
been
diverse and inspiring, with many “I have to try that!”
ideas.
Coming
shows
-
Surface
Design is a sponsor of FAB
(Fabulous Arts Boutique, formerly “Fiber”) and Fiber Arts
2009.
Betsy
Meyer is the
representative from SD to the committee for FAB. Kathie Hayes and Betsy
explained process, provided entry forms and were available to answer
questions.
It is held at Art Center Sarasota on November
20-22.
Fiber Arts 2009 is at
Venice Art Center March 13-28. There will be two jurors,
one for
baskets and one for everything else. There is a fee per piece
entered.
ATCs(artist trading cards) –
At
each meeting there is a voluntary swap
of these 2 ½ x 3/12 mini works of art.
They
should be
signed and dated. Call Judy Merick for more
information.
Challenges – instead of swaps this year, we will have
challenges. The difference is that members show their challenge item but
do not
have to part with it. The December meeting will be a Christmas ornament
challenge. April TBA; suggestions for a theme are
welcomed.
Coming meetings:
October, a new
member, Marilyn, will present an intriguing dying program. November, Pam
Thomas
from Tampa will teach us collage
techniques. (we loved her art
examples that she put on our Inspiration table when she visited last
spring!)
Play Days- on the last Sunday of each month, 1-4 we
gather in
the firehouse to have fun. When applicable, we have a chance to
experience the
previous program art hands-on. Marilyn will be there for dying in
October and
Pam for collage in November. For September, bring whatever you want to
work
on.
Tonight’s Program –
Lisa Seaboyer, Artistic Director
from Colleen Cassidy-Burns Gallery-
Marketing Your Art
Lisa
brought a
wonderful display of diverse items offered for sale at her gallery from
some of
the 30 consignors who participate there. She explained how the
consignment
process works, gave a detailed handout with the information we need to
know as
possible consignors anywhere, and answered questions. Thanks, Lisa, for a
very
helpful program.
Respectfully
submitted,
