February 2009 Newsletter
Following the 6-6:30
social hour, Kendra opened the meeting with a welcome to members and
guests. Today's meeting had been changed because the city of Sarasota
needed the room for the election. The February minutes were approved.
The treasurer reported a balance of $1007.44 and 43 members.
Venice Fiber Art Show
We have
many members participating in the Venice Fiber Art show, March 13-28 at
the Venice Art Center. The reception is 3/13 from 4-6pm.
Fashion Show next month
Our
next meeting is the Surface Design Fashion show. Diane needs to have a
short spiel about each entry by March 24. It was lots of fun last year
so this one should be even better. People can model their own
creations or bring a model. If you have created many beautiful items,
you can change in the ladies room and hit the runway more than once.
There will be prizes and refreshments. Email or phone Diane - do not
bring to play day since she will not be there.
May is our
challenge - start thinking now of something amazing that a - relates
to 5, either has 5 parts or the number; b - uses metal; c - uses
cardboard; and d - uses the color blue. The December challenge was
great, so let's see what comes out of this unlikely combination.
Nominating Committee
Cheryl Martin and Laura Reed have volunteered to be on the nominating
committee, with Cheryl as chair. There is already a candidate for VP
and Secretary. If you would like to be President or Treasurer, call
Cheryl. They will report at the April meeting, the election will be in
June.
March Play Date Changed
Note: the March Play Day has been changed to March 22.
It should be very fun playing with heat effects as introduced in our
program today. Our April play day will be a "nuno" felting class from
Kathy Hays including supplies. Cost $25.
June Meeting - Kevin Tobin Demo
The June meeting
will be a demo of Golden Products. There will be a workshop for $75 on
June 27 for a minimum, of 10 people, with price adjusted down if
greater participation. He supplies everything and will provide 18
techniques.
Arts Tonight Information
Arts Tonight offers an opportunity for artists
and performers to be paired with a business and do demos on May 9 at 5
pm. Art Center Sarasota has opening 3/19 for Icons and Idols.
Creators and Collectors tour is this weekend. The Quilt show is at the
muni auditorium. Art Center at St. Pete has a Jasper Johns exhibit.
Art Center Manatee has a juried show. LBK art center has a febric
designers show and sale. Indian Rocks beach has a class in fabric
bowls this Sunday for $15.
Join in the Show-n-Tell Inspiration Table
Our inspiration table seemed to
have less than usual - perhaps because some of our best was at Venice
for the fiber show. The ATC had pretty good representation and the
usual wide diversity of ideas and techniques.
Hot Flashes Program
The program was
"Hot Flashes can be Fun". Kendra gave us updates on Friendly Plastic,
which has some new twists since we did it 20+ years ago. Chris Lacki
showed heat effects with tybek, Lutrador, craft felt, and even drier
lint. Shelli expanded on her technique pages information about all the
interesting things that can be done with shrink art. If you come to
the play day, consider bringing your heat gun so we don't have to wait
to take turns while trying out these ideas. Chris also suggested
pre-work - paint lumiere in tyvek, Lutradoe, dryer sheets or non-glued
non-woven interfacings and then stitch patterns with cotton thread so
you can be ready to apply heat at play day.
Respectfully submitted,
Carol Anderson, Secretary
