Minutes
Surface Design Guild General Meeting
April 15, 2009 --  630PM at Firehouse

For the second month in a row, our meeting had to be changed because the room was needed for Sarasota city elections.  Kendra welcomed members and guests to a short business meeting preceding our fashion show.

  • The May meeting program will be given by Jennifer Wiles and patsy monk on polymer clay.
  • The nominating committee will present the slate of officers for next year.  They have agreed to furnish job descriptions for each position.
  • Our sales table, inspiration table, free stuff table and ATCs to be swapped were in the rear of the room.  (Both the inspiration and ATCs showed the influence from the heat techniques of the March meeting and play day.
  • The treasurer reported a balance of $931.66 (before adding the $250) and 45 members.
  • There will be Nuno Felting workshop presented by Kathy Hays at the next play day, April 26, 1-4 pm.  The cost is $25, including supplies.  (Contact Judy Merick to see what tools to bring from home).
  • The June program will be on Golden products, and the June play day will have a Golden workshop for $75 (or less, perhaps $65 if enough participation).  This will not produce a finished project, but information on many techniques and many samples to use later at home.

Fashion Show Highlights
The highlight of this evening was our 2nd annual fashon show of wearable art, Divas Gone Wild.  Nearly half of our members participated, with examples of embellished dresses, shirts, jackets, and blouses, woven, knit, and repurposed boot and bra handbags, woven scarves, a baby onesie, and lots more.  The audience enjoyed the lovely violin playing of Angella Ruffino and  voted for favorites, with prizes going to 1st - Bettie Coulter;  2nd - Lois MIlls; and 3rd - Nancy David.  Delicious refreshments followed.

The ATC swap would have been an anti-climax except that we had a creative variety of cards there as well.

Venice Fiber Arts Show Summary
The Fiber Arts show in Venice in March was a success artistically and financially, with $250 reimbursement each to the 4 participating guilds.  Many members of Surface Design Sarasota won ribbons in their categories and also participated in the demonstrations that were given throughout the run of the show.  The next show will be in 2012.

FAB Report
Kathy Hayes reported that FAB will probably be at the Sarasota Art Center for Valentine's Day weekend in 2010.  It may be extended to include 3-4 Sunday hours as well.  The art center has a previous booking for the usual FAB November date in 2009.

REMINDER - get working now on both your ATC for the May meeting and the challenge.  Time is running out unless you work best under pressure.  The challenge: must include the color blue, the number 5 or 5 of some design element, some metal, and some cardboard.

Respectfully submitted,
Carol Anderson, Secretary
