Minutes
Surface Design Guild meeting
September 8, 2009
6:33pm @ Firehouse
patsy opened the meeting, welcoming guests and new members.
Laura Reed approved the minutes and Carol Dawkins seconded. The treasurer, Marcia Kaszuba, reported we had 3 paid members before the meeting, 22 members paid at the meeting on 9/8/09 and 2 members paid after the meeting. We presently have 25 paid members plus 5 board members, totaling 30 members to date. Our account balance began with $603.85, $250 was paid to Manasota Weaver’s Guild, leaving a balance of $353.85. Last year we had 42 members and patsy has a goal of 75 members this year.
Old Business: Betsy was in a car wreck, so could not report on FAB, which will be held in the Spring. Her report will be tabled for now.
New Business: Kim explained her “All Things String” event we will be participating in for Somerset Studios. She made a paper shawl pattern for all participants to follow for color placement. It depicted a sunset on the beach. She then cut it apart so each person could take a section and design/embellish/create their section. Then it will be sewn together for a cohesive product to be continued in October.
By-laws: Laura would like to take charge of this project.
They were revised two years ago and are very vague. The nominating committee was confused by them. Job descriptions and checking account information were unclear. They would like to have this project finished by January.
Website: Kendra is in charge of this and would like help with content. Pictures need to be taken and posted. It costs $270/yr. to use the software, so we need to come up with ways to raise money for maintenance. It was suggested that we conduct workshops, have a blog and have paypal to pay dues in the future. Kim explained how to post a topic. If we’re participating with another group, those pictures should be posted on the site. We could also put ATC’s and Zentangles on it. Feedback is needed.
Bookmaking Ideas: Use watercolor paper, art books, any kind of book to cut up and use to make another book. In October Kim is asking each person to bring a book to share and one to donate.
On Playday we will make a book.
Fashion Show
Holiday Open House: party/show & tell table
Manasota Weaver’s Guild will come here Dec. 8th and we will join them Dec. 12th at St. Armand’s Key Lutheran Church.
We discussed whether we want to meet 12 month/year rather than 10 as we have in the past. We also discussed having 2 people sit at the M&G table before each meeting.
Carol Dawkins was honored by Northport Art Center.
Membership card: Marcia issued one to each member. They are good for discounts at Coastal Quilter, FOB Beads, Picasso’s Moon, Jo-Ann Fabrics and possibly some other places in the future.
ATC Table: there will be a swap each month and new ideas for displaying them will be exchanged. Photos will be taken.
Marketplace: we will have a place to sell our work. There will also be a “freebie” table, so bring anything you’d like to share.
Venues for selling work: (Carol will post these)
Wesley Chapel Art show – Oct. 17 & 18 (juried)
Temple Beth Sholom – Nov. 22 Arts & Craft event
Northport Art Center – holiday theme, Dec. 5 & 6, $50/table
Sarasota Craft Show, Sarasota Bradenton Int’l Convention Center Dec. 4-6 (replacement for ACC Show): we may be able to have a demo table but may not sell anything.
Home Depot: information trade/no selling
Playday: last Sunday of each month. We can stay from 1-8pm.
Laura and Cheryl presented a great program on Zentangles.
They are sized 4x4 or 3x5 and are particularly popular in India, Africa and the Ukraine. There are many schools of thought on the subject: use patterns or do your own thing. There is no right or wrong. They can be used on a myriad of things: greeting cards, note cards, ATC cards, books, mail art, book marks, framed, etc. They are a great group or family project. Laura gave each person a Zentangle bookmark she made.
Materials best to use are sharpie pens, micron pens, cardstock or watercolor paper.
patsy will attend a Zentangle Class with Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, Zentangle masters.
There is a site called zentangle.com and a newsletter on site.
Online patterns are available.
There was a Zentangle swap at the end of the meeting.
Meeting was adjourned at 8pm.
