Surface Design Guild Meeting

Following
the 6-6:30 social hour, Kendra
opened the meeting and welcomed all. Diane was out of
town.
Among
the visitors and new members were
Gordon, Kuhn whose alpacas got him started in fiber, Jan Woodward,
spinner and
weaver, Joyce Sargeant, Galen Bacon and Joanne Shepard. Louise Hall, one
of the
founders of Surface Design Sarasota, was back with us. The minutes from
September (available on the web site) were approved. The treasurer
reported 22
members and a balance of $1133.40 , not counting members paying during
this
meeting. Dues for this year are due now, and should be mailed to Judy
Merick
asap.
Old
Business
–
FAB
-Kathy and Betsy were here to
consult for FAB questions during the social hour. It is not too late to
sign up.
They brought the post cards, which are even bigger and better than last
year’s.
Eight people from SD are asked to volunteer to make food for the opening
from a
designated group of recipes.
Inspiration table – will continue. Members are encouraged
to bring
items of interest to display, along with a card with their name and
explanation
of the technique if needed.
Name tags- hopefully made by the artist. Leave in
handbag or
car so they will not be forgotten at home.

(Fabulous Arts Boutique, formerly “Fiber”) and Fiber Arts 2009, Nov.
20-22 at
Sarasota Art Center.
Surface Design is a
new sponsor
of Fiber Arts 2009 at Venice Art Center. Betsy attended meeting. There is $5
entry
fee/item. List of categories forthcoming. Commission is
25%.
Last Minute
Opportunity – North Port Art Center is having a luau this Saturday, Oct. 18.
Free space
to any person or group with their own tent, and 30% commission. Contact
423-6460
NAC.
ATCs(artist trading cards) –
At
each meeting there is a voluntary swap
of these 2 ½ x 3/12 mini works of art. They should be signed and dated.

Challenges – instead of swaps this year, we will have
challenges.
Coming meetings - November, Pam Thomas from
Tampa will teach us collage techniques. (we
loved her art
examples that she put on our Inspiration table when she visited last
spring!)
December – party and ornament challenge.
Play Days- on the last Sunday of each month at 1-4
we gather
in the firehouse to have fun. When applicable, we have a chance to
experience
the previous program art hands-on. Marilyn will be there for dying in
October
and Pam for collage in November.

reports from sister guild in Tampa that there is a workshop on crow dolls at
Indian Rocks Art Center. $5, Sunday, Oct
19.
Tonight’s
Program – Marilyn Amick – Folded and dyed Paper
(Origamizami ?)
Marilyn
demonstrated how rice paper can become a geometric rainbow with her
createx
airbrush color and procion mx. We
will look forward to hands-on for the next play day, Oct
26.
