Surface Design Guild Sarasota
May 2009

Kendra opened the meeting, welcoming guests. The treasurer reported $443.85 in the bank and a check to be deposited for $250 from Manasota Weavers.  This is the return of our seed money from the Fiber Arts show in Venice in March.  Our dues of $25 per year are payable in September.

Nominating Committe Report
Cheryl Martin reported for the nominating committee (which included Laura Reed and Kendra Drobnak).

President:  patsy monk
VP: Kim Sherrod
Secretary: Nancy Faris
Treasurer: Marcia Kaszuba.

Kendra announced our new web site:
http://surfacedesisignguildsarasota.camp9.org/

We will eventually have lots of great features and it will come up on Google.  People who have web sites can link to it, giving us greater exposure.  There will be public and membership only areas.  Kendra suggests we try it out and keep checking in as she develops it further.

Banner Contest
There is a summer contest to design a banner for the site:  needs to be a jpeg file, 919 x 150 pixels.

May Play Day
The May play day is May 31 - polymer clay.  patsy says she will have kits for $5, so people should just bring a hot mitt and heat gun.

Kevin Tobin Workshop
June is Kevin Tobin with Golden demos, $75 with 10 participants or less if more people sign up.  This workshop will be 10-3 with about 18 techniques to learn and materials furnished.

May Challenge
After  great participation with the December challenge, we had a varied and creative display for the May challenge.  This was to include the number 5 or 5 elements, metal, cardboard, and blue.  (And Jackie Cory sent one in from Tennessee via Nancy David.  She must miss us, as we miss her.)

Fun Stuff
Art Center Sarasota has a new exhibit opening May 13.  Anne McCunney had a piece juried in.  Our sales table, inspiration table, free stuff table and ATCs to be swapped were on display for all to enjoy.

Program
Polymer Clay.  patsy gave us a history (who knew it was developed by Baekeland of bakelite fame, over 100 years ago but not colored till 1984?) and then showed techniques using liquid and inclusions.  Jennifer showed stamped cabochons.  Thanks for an interesting program and the upcoming hands-on play day.
