Minutes

                                Surface Design Guild Meeting

                                     June 10, 2008

                                    6:30 pm at Firehouse

Kendra opened the meeting and welcomed all to the last meeting before summer break. She welcomed guest Linda Spivy – a friend of Cheryl and Betsey. The minutes from May were approved. The treasurer reported 56 members and a balance of $821.90. Our year begins with dues to be paid by September. Any contact changes should be sent to Judy Merick along with the dues. Kendra reminded us to sign in and make nametags. Summer would be a good time to make new ones.

Questions about finding our web site were raised. It may be possible thru Google but not easily. A link is included in Anna’s email every month, but non-members or perspectives would not have that information. (Members who are not getting the emails should tell Anna).  Nancy volunteered to find out more about other web sites. The AOL one we use is free.

Old business: our bylaws permit paid workshops outside of our regular meetings, on the last Sunday of the month. Play days have become a frequent substitute for workshops, but are not mandated. However, because some members said they would miss having an August play day because the doll workshop is to occur on Sunday, August 31, Kendra has arranged for the room at the firehouse to be available on Saturday, August 30 for a play day. In the future, there may be more workshops on the Sunday dates, to give a more structured learning opportunity to our members.

FAB update – Diane, Kendra and Betsey met with Kathie Hayes regarding areas of concern. The rules have been changed to make the show more inclusive. The F in FAB is now Fabulous instead of Fiber. Surface Design work, defined as the complex embellishment and transformation of materials including fibers, paper, clay, glass and metal, is now added as a category of work to be accepted.  We can have a person on the screening committee familiar with SD standards. The board voted to participate. Results from the November 2007 show: 16 members of Surface Design Sarasota participated, and in total had the highest sales of any of the sponsoring groups. Rules and applications were passed out. If a person registers by September 2, her name will appear on the post card. She can submit a professional quality photo of a piece of her work but it MUST be something that will be on sale when the show opens Nov 20-22. All of us should think of people who should be added to the mailing list. Give names by September. We can also take post cards nearer the show date to give out wherever appropriate, to friends, co-workers, neighbors, people at our health clubs, our doctor and dentist, etc. People not at the meeting who need FAB forms, get the address of Kathie Hayes from our web site, email her, and she will email the forms to you.

The SD board met preceding this meeting to plan for next year. Thanks to people who filled out the survey. The September meeting will be a person from a local gallery to speak about pricing work and what they look for. This should really help us get ready for FAB. The board also voted to join Venetian Basketry and Manasota Weavers in the Venice Art Center Fiber Art Exhibit in March 2009. This is an opportunity for members to submit the very best of their work to be judged and sold. This show is in the main gallery at the VAC and is held every third year.

Nominating committee report:  The slate presented all the current officers. There were no nominees from the floor. The slate was accepted by a vote. One of the changes for next year is that there will be “challenges” instead of swaps (except for the ATC swap, which will continue). The first challenge is a holiday ornament for the December meeting. There is time for each of us to think of something special to make, show and tell about to the admiration of our peers, and then take home to enjoy our own creativity. We will have social time 6- 6:30 before each meeting. There will be technique pages in February (final sign-up at the January meeting) and a fashion show in March (final sign-up at the February meeting.

Six members swapped ATCs.

Kim Sherrod (aka Calamity Kim) gave a very interesting  program on Martha Stewart paper flowers (with some hints that Martha did not cover). This will be the topic for the June 29 play day play day to follow.

Respectfully submitted,

Carol Anderson
