Minutes

Sarasota Surface Design Guild Meeting

January 12, 2010

6:35 pm @ Firehouse

The meeting was called to order by patsy monk, president.  Lori Stone was thanked for being a greeter tonight.  Guests from the Tampa Surface Design Guild as well as other guests and new members were introduced and welcomed.  Betsy Meyer moved to approve December meeting minutes,  Kim Sherrod seconded and the motion was carried.

Laura Reed stated the information on the By Laws was incorrect and the committee would read them at the meeting.  The motion was made by Pat Mattay for the accepting of the minutes but they were not approved.  They were changed and Shawn Wood moved to accept the minutes as corrected.  The minutes were then approved.

Treasurer, Marcia Kaszuba reported we have $1,440.77 in our account and 62 members.  Diane Bunker brought in 5 new members and will receive a check for $25.   In March dues will decrease to $15 for the remainder of the year.

Nancy Faris, Secretary reported we welcome any ideas and suggestions for the suggestion box.

Old Business:  The results of the survey were discussed.  From the hand-out survey form given at the December meeting, there was a majority interested in year-round meetings.  The members present were asked to raise their hands and it was determined that a quorum was present.  The vote carried to meet year-round.  Discussion continued as to when the physical year would end, when the Nominations Committee would be formed and when the new board would be voted in.  Pat Fox made a motion to table the discussion at this time.  Joy Cleveringa seconded it.

The discussion followed that the By Laws committee would come to the next board meeting to continue working on this project.  Next board meeting is March 14th at Nancy Faris' house.

Betsey Meyer reported on FAB, which is February 11-14, 2010 at Art Center Sarasota.  40 artists were registered as of 1/15/10.  Any questions should be directed to Betsy.  Event post cards will be ready next week.  Volunteers are needed for refreshments.

Marlene Glickman reported on the Sewing & Quilt Expo, held February 18-20 in Tampa.  Two free booths will be provided if our members volunteer, one booth for Surface Design and one for demos. There are five openings for booth sitting, so please contact Terry Sheetz @ 1-888-400-7414 by the end of the week  to volunteer.  You may sell your work if you are working in the booth at the time of your sale.  Marlene reported that their group membership grew considerably as a result of this show.  Cheryl Martin is doing a metal weaving demo that Thursday 3:30-5 and Kim offered to drive her up.  Marlene is conducting a hand-dyed silk workshop all day that Friday.

Kim Sherrod reported on the Anything String Shawl Project submitted to Somerset Studios magazine.  The project is on hold at this time.  According to Jenny Doh, editor-in-chief, the company is no longer publishing "All things String".  As a result, the project is under consideration for Belle Armoire publication.  She will keep us posted.

Pat Fox reported on our 10th Anniversary Party scheduled for February.  Founder Louise Hall will attend, and Pat Mattay is contacting previous members in hopes they will attend as well.  Cake and beverages will be served.  Kim will set up and needs volunteers to help.  Kendra had flyers for the members to take for the event.

Kendra indicated there was nothing to report about the website.

The By Laws were read by Betsey Meyer, reading them prior to change.  Nancy David read them as proposed to be changed.  They will be posted on the website.

New Business:  Our group has grown to the point that we need a Membership Coordinator to assist the Treasurer and a Show/Publicity Coordinator to co-ordinate opportunities and help advise.

Kim took a count on who will participate in our February Tech Pages Trade.  She showed examples from previous years of the quality that is necessary to participate.  Each page should be inserted into a plastic sleeve and artists should bring enough pages for each participant.  She suggested bringing a 3-ring binder to put the collection in.  She had a sign-up sheet for those present to indicate they would participate.  Kendra added to this list those who responded by e-mail.  More explanation of this project can be found in "Talk Amongst Yourselves" on our website.

Our 3rd Annual Surface Design Version of Project Runway Fashion Show will be held at our April 13th meeting.  Please refer to the handout Kim provided for theme suggestions.   She also reported that this year we are urged to walk  more slowly and stop often during the program so that our work can be fully appreciated by the audience.  There will be door prizes, category prizes and business card-size advertising will be available in the brochure.  Prize donations are gratefully accepted.  There will be a brief meeting before the show that evening.

Judy Merrick reported on the Northport Art Center Show, held 3/1 - 4/23.  Receiving is 2/27 and a reception is 3/6.  Wall space is available, with a minimal amount of 3D space.  Artists are urged to bring their own props.  Entry fee is $7/piece.  There is no security provided.  Further information for this event can be found on our website.

Our Membership Directory is on our website.  Use your e-mail and first name as your password for entry.  Proposed By-Laws will be on the website tomorrow.

A short break was taken.

Laura Reed presented a program on Hardware Store Finds & Printing.  Please refer to her handouts and our website for details.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:43 pm.

Respectfully submitted by

Nancy Faris, Secretary
